The market is firming these days and what was out of favor is now meeting demand. Growth stocks had certainly been weak while investors fled to defensive sectors. That is beginning to change now. Using the Premium Stock Screener at out sister site TradingStockAlerts.com, we have identified a list of growth stocks whose 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) has, within the last few days, started to turn up in a bullish direction. Q3-2009 Growth Report - Part 2. Who are the Growth Elite?

Last week I released the first part of this series entitled " Q3 Growth Report - Part 1 ". In that post I presented some of the data compiled by our Alert HQ processes. The focus was on Revenue and earnings per share. I contrasted 2009 Q1 and Q2 results with our recent Q3 results. In this post, I'll do the same with dividends. Increasing Dividends -- For today's purposes, I'll highlight the companies that managed to increase dividends this quarter. The following table provides the comparison among the three quarters: Q1-2009 Q2-2009 Q3-2009 In S&P 500 140 112 104 All stocks 829 778 826 The number of stocks in the S&P 500 that increased their dividend and have made it onto Part 2 of this quarter’s report has decreased yet again though only by a little. More encouraging, the number of stocks that raised their dividend is up by more than 6%. Note that we are looking at a universe of roughly 7000 stocks. Repeat winners -- There w...

Q3-2009 Growth Report - Part 1

The third quarter earnings season is about over. It's time to take stock (no pun intended, well, maybe it was). After each quarter's earnings season, I try to pull together what I call the Growth Report. Part 1 compiles the list of stocks that have shown a year-over-year increase in both revenue and earnings AND a sequential quarter-over-quarter increase in both revenue and earnings. Given the perception that the economic downturn is easing, it will be interesting to see how many companies have been able to to pull off this trick. The following table presents a comparison of the last three quarters: Q1-2009 Q2-2009 Q3-2009 In S&P 500 27 41 39 All stocks 218 312 281 The number of stocks in the S&P 500 that qualified as growth leaders and made it onto the Q2 Growth Report grew by 50% over the first quarter. Comparisons, however, are becoming more difficult. In Q3, we are actually seeing a small decrease is the number of growth leaders as compared ...

Q2 Growth Report - Part 2

Earnings or dividends: which is more important? Which provides more of a clue to the outlook for this market? Earlier this week I released the first part of this series entitled " Q2 Growth Report - Part 1 ". In that post I presented some of the data compiled by our Alert HQ processes. The focus was on Revenue and EPS. I contrasted 2009 Q1 results with our recent Q2 results. In this post, I'll do the same with dividends. For today's purposes, I'll highlight the companies that managed to increase dividends this quarter. The following table provides the comparison between the two quarters: Q1-2009 Q2-2009 In S&P 500 140 112 All stocks 829 778 The number of stocks in the S&P 500 that increased their dividend and have made it onto Part 2 the Q2 Growth Report has decreased by 28. At first glance that doesn’t seem too bad but actually that corresponds to a 20% decline. Similarly, looking at the entire stock market, the number of stocks that raised dividends in ...

Q2 Growth Report - Part 1

Today's Wall Street Journal had an article that asked the question "Can Rally Run without Revenue?" Is the revenue situation really that bad? Let's take a quick look at some the data compiled through the Alert HQ process. After each quarter's earnings season, I try to pull together what I am now calling the Growth Report. Part 1 compiles the list of stocks that have shown a year-over-year increase in both revenue and earnings AND a sequential quarter-over-quarter increase in both revenue and earnings. Given the severity of the economic downturn, very few companies have been able to to pull off this trick. The following table presents a comparison of the last two quarters: Q1-2009 Q2-2009 In S&P 500 27 41 All stocks 218 312 The number of stocks in the S&P 500 that qualify as growth leaders and have made it onto the Q2 Growth Report has grown by 50%. Similarly, looking at the entire stock market, the number of growth leaders has almost doubled in Q2 as comp...

Surprising number of stocks increase dividends

Earlier this week I wrote a post that listed all the Growth Leaders from the 1Q2009 earnings season. These were the stocks that were able to register growth in both EPS and Revenues sequentially and year-over-year. Today's post is in a similar vein. This time we are looking at dividends. Since most dividend announcements are delivered along with earnings reports and earnings season is drawing to a close, this seems like a good time to list all those stocks managed to increase dividends. Despite the fact that stocks are struggling to rise from bear market lows, there were a good number of stocks that were in decent enough financial shape that they were able to raise their dividends. Here is the breakdown: Of the universe of stocks that we evaluated, there were 829 that increased dividends. That is over 11% Of these stocks, 140 were in the S&P 500. In other words, 28% of the stocks in the S&P 500 were able to raise their dividend payouts. Not bad for a recession and an index...

Earnings season is over - who were the Growth Leaders?

Earnings season is pretty much over now. Many companies managed to beat drastically reduced expectations. As a result, many bears focused on poor earnings quality and the fact that the bar had been lowered so far, it was no great accomplishment to exceed expectations. There were a number of stocks, though, that beat fair and square. We compiled a list of stocks that had increased earnings per share sequentially and year-over-year and increased revenues sequentially and year-over-year. We had 218 stocks that made the list. We then cross referenced this list with the S&P 500 and came up with the following list of 27 stocks: Symbol Name AET AETNA INC. AFL AFLAC INC. BMC BMC SOFTWARE, INC. GILD Gilead Sciences, Inc. Forty stocks that have defied the downturn

As earnings season begins to unfold, it is a good time to look at some stocks that have managed to show growth despite the economic downturn. The following list was generated by screening for the following characteristics: The stock must have shown sequential quarterly growth as well as year-over-year growth in both EPS and Revenue The stock must have appeared on the TradeRadar Trend Leaders list this past weekend. This means that, besides being above their 50-DMA, they have also been determined to be in strong up-trends according to Aroon analysis, DMI and MACD.
