Time to buy -- little known small cap could be Gulf of Mexico value stock

I've been dabbling with applying some of our Swing Signals algorithms to weekly data. This past weekend I came up with an interesting stock that generated a Strong BUY signal. The company is Energy XXI (Bermuda) Limited (EXXI). Background -- The company engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of oil and natural gas properties onshore in Louisiana and Texas and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. As of June 30, 2009, it had proved reserves of 53.1 million barrels of oil equivalent, as well as operated or had an interest in 274 producing wells on 148,784 net developed acres. With all the negative publicity around companies that drill in the Gulf of Mexico, it's a bit of a surprise to see a company like Energy XXI beginning to register gains in its stock price. What seems to be happening is that investors are beginning to discriminate between deep water drillers and shallow water drillers. Energy XXI drills in waters only 100 feet deep. The company ten...

Weekly ProShares review shows bulls in the ascendancy -- can it last?

Last week I presented a list of the ProShares ETFs that had exhibited the strongest performance over the course of the last week. I received a number of comments over at Seeking Alpha requesting that I do it again so here it is. Purpose -- The ProShares leveraged ETFs are primarily short-term trading vehicles and, as such, they can be viewed as indicators of short-term sentiment. Since the ETFs come in both styles and sectors, this analysis might shed some light on how investors currently view large caps, small caps, sectors and indexes. The following table lists those members of the ProShares family that have turned in the best performance over the course of the last week (the period from last Tuesday through this Monday). The criteria is that any ETF with double-digit gains makes the list. This week I also add a measure of volume where I compare this week's average volume to the previous week's average volume. Increased volume may confirm increase in price as an indic...

Warning signs for semiconductors?

I have been pounding the table for tech and especially semiconductors for months. Today, however, I came across a post at EETimes.com that throws a little cold water on my enthusiasm. Here is a quote from the article: Gartner Inc. analysts Bryan Lewis and Peter Middleton, said: ''Worldwide semiconductor revenue in 2010 is projected to reach $290 billion, a 27.1 percent increase from 2009 revenue of $228 billion. The outlook for the semiconductor industry has improved from Gartner's first quarter of 2010 forecast, when we projected worldwide semiconductor sales to grow 19.9 percent. ''Chip revenue growth is clearly outpacing system revenue growth, and that is a concern. Gartner's new semiconductor forecast has below-average growth in the second half of 2010, as we are anticipating a minor correction to realign semiconductor sales with electronic system sales.'' In other words, the chip makers are cranking out semiconductors but those companies build...

Slide show demonstrates ease of use of new Trade-Radar Stock Inspector software

With the release of the latest version of the Trade-Radar Stock Inspector software we have to redo some of the documentation that was previously used to introduce users to the program. The updated slideshow below shows some of the software's new features and highlights its simplicity. I have always contended that the Trade-Radar software is very easy to use. There are two main areas that the following slideshow demonstrates: Charting - setting up the chart to generate the indicators may not be immediately obvious to new users. The slideshow below describes how to use the new "Automatic Chart Setup" feature as a shortcut.  Evaluating Indicators - all three tabs on the revamped and greatly expanded Dashboard screen and all the associated indicators are displayed. The slideshow goes on to explain how to evaluate our indicators and make your final Buy or Sell decision.  On to the slideshow! (Look for the icon that allows you to view in full screen mode.) Trade-Rada...
